Happy third birthday Jesse Tucker.

policeman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burch_0197

This last year has been the absolute most chaotic year of my life and you’re partly to blame. From the more serious mishaps, like me tearing my acl and not being able to carry you for 12 weeks, to you getting tangled up with some fire ants and ending up in the er, in anaphylactic shock at the peak of covid> > > to the milder yet still annoying ones, like you drawing on my cream linen sofa with a brown marker, and also on the wood trim with a pencil and also killing all of my patio plants by watering them with salt water. . .
It’s been a wild ride.
In fact I am not even sure how much of that happened in the last twelve months or what happened in the last 24, but it’s all starting to run together.
At THREE YEARS OLD
you’re nearly potty trained, but since you have the vocabulary and the height of a 5 year old, everyone tends to forgett (including daddy) that you’re still just a baby.
Except when we’re talking to Joe. . . since he taunts you as the baby all 16ish hours of the day that the two of you are awake.
You’re currently obsessed with policemen and spend most of your time at home writing all of us tickets for littering.
You also do this at mimi’s.
At night you ask for the “corner” of your favorite blankie and you softly caress your own face (or mine, if we’ve had a good day) until you fall asleep. . .
you also make me scratch your back for so long that I end up getting too sleepy to get up, and have been unable to finish most of my work (that I typically finish at night while everyone is asleep, because I’ve accidentally fallen asleep, beside you, with my hand on your back)
You only want Chase (paw patrol) apple juice and you also eat more sweets than just about everyone in our house (except sissy).
Your favorite morning is Friday, because grandpa drops off chocolate donuts which you only eat the tops (chocolate) off of.
((Those also end up on my sofa))
At 3, you also refuse to allow us to put you into the car (or take you out) and you can move your tiny step-ladder & climb up and onto the trampoline all by yourself.
You love feeding the chickens live worms.
You could spend hours in your sandbox with the sprinkler & drives your dad wild, watching your pasty white skin soak up the sun.
When I brush your teeth you refuse to keep your front teeth together and always drink from the faucet when we’re done.
&& all of these are tiny little moments I know will soon be over or that I’ll forget, so I wanted to write them here.
I know you’re going to do amazing things.
All of you are.
But you’re more motivated than the bunch because you feel like they got a head start.
You’ll be smart like Jackson, kind like sissy, and strong like Joey.
You also tell daddy you’ll be as big as he is, & I hope that for you too.
I love you so much Jesse policeman Tucker burch. My forever baby.shoutout to BLUSHING BALLOONS for the balloon swag & COOKIE MONSTERS for the adorable cookies
MAJORRRR shoutout to LISA + her man, TOMMI from ECSO for making this the best day ever by surprising him with a visit from a REAL POLICE OFFICER! ! !policeman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burchpoliceman third birthday party birthday blue inspiration by jordan burch

10 years ago I was invited to shoot a high end wedding in the mountains of Beaver Creek, Colorado.
My childhood best friend, Jenna was marrying the man of her dreams.
The plan was for me, and my family of (4) to fly and spend the weekend in Colorado with my family while also shooting her wedding day.

One day before our trip was to take place, Juliana was hospitalized with pneumonia.
She was 2 at the time, and leaving her was one of the hardest things I ever did as a mom.
Instead of flying and spending the weekend, I flew a red eye the night before, shot all day, and caught the first plane home the next morning > > >
but I had been dying to get back ever since.

godddd if only i could go back ten years ago, and shoot this all over <3

godddd if only i could go back ten years ago, and shoot this all over <3

Beaver Creek is all things lovely.
It’s beautiful and expensive, but incredible.

I’d never ski-d but convinced my sister, 2020 was the year to finally make the trip with both of our families (with young children in tow)
if the kardashians could do it, so could we.
((note, i was wrong, and won’t ever plan another trip based on their capabilities and our own. . .))

we spent weeks ordering cute ski suits and matching wool sweaters for the cousins.
I lucked up and found ski jackets at our local tj maxx, which honestly saved us hundreds of dollars.

We flew delta, a
My kids did AWESOME on the flights.
It was Jesse’s first flight, but thanks to delta having on flight entertainment and limiting how many people fly, we were comfortable and the travel was as easy as it could be with 4 small kids.

We were able to catch a LYFT from DENVER INT’L and take the 2.5 hour trek to BEAVER CREEK in style.
We arrived and checked into The Park Hyatt  for the next 5 days

BC4

BC
The hotel staff was nice. We rented two rooms (my mom came along too as a birthday gift from us) and also opted to let three of our kids stay with her in a 2 queen room, while Jason and I got a King bed with a crib for us and the babe. We were able to get attaching rooms, which was also super nice.  I’d encourage you to book directly through BEAVER CREEK PARK HYATT to ensure the best rates and service. FYI it says there is a starbucks onsite, but that is NOT TRUE. not only that, but there isn’t a starbucks in beaver creek AT ALL. to some this may not be an issue. but.
moving on.

My sister had been ski-ing before and prompted us to get fitted for our skis the day before we were to ski. We reserved our ski lift tickets here . I am so glad we got fitted at the shop in town and did our skis that night, because it took approximately 2 hours for our family of (11) to all get fitted, which would have cost us half of our ski day.

If you’ve never ski’d before, I’d highly recommend SKI SCHOOL and Beaver Creek has one of the best in the US. Our boys did (1) day and greatly improved. Next time, we will certainly do 2-3 half day lessons for them and I am certain they’d be ready for all the green and blues their hearts could handle.  I will 100% sign Jason up too. Bless him.

More about the actual trip / town / experience. . .

1.) how was it with covid
this is the question I no doubt got asked the most. the mask thing is super annoying. obviously. you had to wear a mask on the slopes, in the hotel, when not eating, around the town, in your lyft/uber, on the bus and so forth. ski-ing requires so much gear and layers anyways, that also wearing a mask was certainly an annoyance, but it did help to keep our faces warmer!  as far as eating goes, all of the local eats within the town of beaver creek were open for dine in as well as delivery. we were very annoyed to not have a starbucks near by, but there is one about (15 minutes) away, but for a lyft to take you (because the hotel shuttle will not) was about $25.00 > > > steep price for a caffeine addiction.  there was a cute little shop in town that had canolis, almond milk and espresso so we did settle for their coffee a few times.   aside from that, it was nice. Not busy, pretty empty actually, everywhere and it peaks my interest to know how long a place of such grandeur can survive this pandemic, with minimal income.

2.) fave eats
My favorite thing we ate was the pork shank from The Golden Eagle Inn, donuts from The Northside Kitchen   (conveniently located near Starbucks), everything at Splendido was delicious, but the Prime was on point (and the kids loved their cotton candy dessert), pizza from The Blue Moose   and sushi from Hooked  was as good as any sushi back home, and nearllllyyy everyday, we enjoyed the breakfast buffet from our hotel, which I’d encourage you to buy ahead of time. The best part is, when you’re done, you can take TO GO boxes from the buffet back to your room (so we’d get pastries and fresh fruit that kids snacked on throughout the day.

3.) kids activities
so here is what I learned. if you have never ski’d before, DO SKI SCHOOL. at least one day.
if you don’t, don’t pack all of your kids in skis, jump on the lift, and assume you’ll figure out the bunny hops when you get there.
Maybe with older kids, but for us (13,10,5,3,2,1)  to say we were overly confident, would be a MASSIVE understatement.
I thought there would be more places around us (walking distance) to build snow men, have a snowball fight, make snow angels and sled. . . but taking a lift or heading to the local golf course, was the only option.  Children are not allowed to sled on the slopes or anywhere on the mountain (which makes sense) and there wasn’t enough snow yet when we arrived to tube (though it came towards the end of our trip) > > > If you asked my kids, their favorite parts were
Jackson: ski-ing, before we needed rescuing
Juliana: ice skating and sledding at golf course
Joe Douglas: ski school and sledding
Jesse : sledding before the snow got too deep

The kids had a WONDERFUL time, and I do imagine we will do it again one day, but if we were to go back anywhere this upcoming year, I’d do a large house near sledding or with a big yard, so we have our own winter wonderland. . .  also, a grocery store and a kitchen ((if you have suggestions, HIT ME UPPPP))

4.) spend
The trip overall was close to 5 figures. . .
$$,$$$
(i know. i know. but totes worth it)

BUT this did include:

1.) flights from Pensacola to Denver
2.) Transportation from airport to hotel and back
3.) All meals
4.) all clothing (winter wear bought from TJ MAXX and then boots, gloves, undergarments, ski goggles, all ordered from amazon)
5.) ski rentals (we all ski-d or attempted, except for Jesse)
6.) ski lift tickets
7.) extracurricular (sleds, we bought, ice skating, tips to drivers, hot cocoas in nearby towns, so forth and so on)
8.) (2) hotel rooms for 6 days / 5 nights
I don’t think I am missing anything, but again, this is a pretty solid number.
Could for sure be done for less, and even easier, for much more. . . but 100% worth it, looking back.

5.) things you wished you’d done

Well we didn’t get to sled or snow mobile, because the first few days there wasn’t enough snow yet, but by day 3, there was PLENTY but we’d be leaving too soon to enjoy it. Also, I really wanted to do the horse drawn carriage / sleigh ride through the mountains.  I also wish we would have been able to tube, as I know the kids would love it, and also think they’d all have enjoyed ski-ing more, with more practice. But ski-ing is a WORK OUT, and getting the kids DRESSED for ski-ing is a workout.  Next winter trip, I’d like to have more time to explore and tube and sled and play, than try and do all the things necessary to ski.  Also, I wished we would have had time for a spa treatment (or two) and spent some time in a hot tub somewhere. . .

OK, i thinkkkk that’s all.
I would 100% do it again, and wished I had known a few things before we went > > >
even Jason said he’d go back!
If you have never been, certainly try it!
Next time, I want to be in a big log cabin, with fluffy snow right outside, without feeling pressured or excluded, by not hitting the slopes.
Beaver Creek is a SKI TOWN. . . so that was my bad. but it was absolutely BEAUTIFUL.

here are a few pics, for proof 🙂
looking at them, it was such an amazing trip.
it was HARD AS HELL.
and when we were there, Jason was complaining that it felt like ANYTHING but a vacation. . .
but that’s what vacations are with kids. .
it’s all for the memories & time spent together,
and this was it <3

((also pictures are out of order, but I finally blogged this, and can’t find the energy to fix it))
enjoy!
xx

first day in the snow, after we epically failed at trying to teach 4 kids to ski, at the same time

I told my mom all I wanted for thanksgiving / christmas was a charcuterie board picnic on the beach.
years ago I told my husband (let’s say, ten years ago, to be safe) and I’m still waiting. . . .
yet I asked my mom, and one week later, we had the most amazing picnic on the beach > > >

my therapist Jeannie told me,
you can’t expect (one) person to meet all of your needs.
((except JC of course))

but much like one food can’t give you all the nutrients you need. . .
my husband is many things, but a romantic, beach picnic planner, he is NOT.

luckily, my mom is 100% over qualified for the task.

It had been (2) years since we did our family video > > > with Pierce Visuals which #dearjason will say isn’t nearly long enough. . .
but for this momma, 2 years is the perfect amount of time to show just how much the kids have all changed. . .
& the difference in the photos, is heartbreaking.

2020 was a wild year.
by far, the WORST.
but also, the best.

it forced us to stop, yet again, and slow down.
to re-prioritize.

I’ve wanted a family for as long as I can remember.
A lovely husband for even longer.
And the past 13 or so years,  I just wanted a nice family picnic on the beach. . .
You know, the all american dream
(or mine anyways)

so while 2020 brought lots of terrible things,
it also made this crazy dream of mine possible too.

So thanks mom for the unreal picnic.
Thanks #dearjason for the family of my dreams.
& thanks C&H for capturing it all for me.

((also, thank you JC ((and mom))  for not allowing the seagulls to tear into our picnic and destroy it before we even got to see it))

2020.
the year all my dreams (and most of my nightmares) came true.

The Burch family charcuterie beach picnic on Pensacola Beach

we had an amazing time traveling to illinois to shoot jackson’s K3 teacher (from 10 years ago, this year!)’ s wedding in Port Byron, Illinois last month > > >

her wedding was amazing,
< < < & her family’s farm THE SAMPLE FARM was out of this world > > >

they’re like Jay, Florida, but on steroids. . .
and with all the farm colors you can imagine.

The barns, are TO DIE FOR.
all the red and white chippy.
The stones.
It’s unreal. . .
the rolling hills, are what my dreams are made of > > >

everywhere I looked, it was so beautiful that honestly I just was super overwhelmed and stimulated
and all but asked jason if he could just meet us up there, so we never had to come home. . . . .
((I now know of a great barn we could quickly turn into a venue))

we attended “miss sample’s” wedding in the am in Port Byron,
and the first set are photos from her farm house and then also the barn where they hosted their reception,
and our our trek back to chicago, we visited JONAMAC ORCHARD  & were thrilled with their apple selection for some fresh pickins > > >

since it was October, most of (what I assume were locals) were super into pumpkins,
which meant we had the apple aisles all to ourselves. . .

I knew the boys would love this, as they’re both super healthy eaters and would also save me some money on hotel snacks (if we had a bag of fresh apples) which actually worked!
We ate apples for dayyyyyssss! ((and knock on wood, no one has been sick either!))

we picked and ate apples until we couldn’t take the cold any longer
and then warmed up with the most delicious apple cider I’d ever tasted, before heading to Chicago for the next few days > > >
((but not before stopping at the local walmart for extra hats and layers))

I wish we could go every single year. . .
((when someone reached out asking about my availability to travel this time next year, I almost SAID YES without even thinking about it))
but I want to save space, for new places too . . .
however > > >
If I could shoot in Alaska every July,
California each September,
Illinois every October,
New York every December
and then spend the rest of my time in Florida. . .
I’d do it in a heartbeat.

here is a quick peak at day (1) of our trip > > >

So thankful for Beth having us out.
I made memories with my boys that will last an entire lifetime. . .

My favorite quick story, about Beth & Jackson, and their connection. . .

When Jackson was three years old he was obsessed with 3 things.
Speedometers, trains and Miss Sample.
When asked who the most beautiful woman in the world was he replied “MISS SAMPLE”

🙂

thankful to return some lovely photos, to a lovely lady, who had a hand in helping me raise my oldest <3
((but also refused to keep my wild one with her in Port Byron)) FAVE_ SAMPLE TBE 042

There are a lot of places I’d like to travel.
California was near the top of that list.

Thought politically we don’t agree on much, it’s a bucket list travel destination for many reasons.

COVID didn’t make traveling easier, but it did make it less expensive. . . so when Lee reached out and asked to purchase Brandi (one of my long time besties) a MOM WORKSHOP for her birthday, I asked if he’d prefer it IN PERSON. After some planning, we agreed that Jason & I would fly from Florida to San Diego for the workshop and make a quick mom + dad getaway out of the trip too.  We scheduled our flights, booked our hotel, and planned it all out, but then> > > HURRICANE SALLY decided to hit, a few weeks before.

I was worried J wouldn’t be able to go,
but after spending nearly two weeks at home with my children (one entire week of that, without WIFI) while he worked 16 hour days. . .
I decided. . . I was going, with or without him.

((Luckily, he was able to join))

We flew in the first day and rented our car from a super cheap place on found on EXPEDIA > > >
I had read mixed reviews, but overall, their pricing for a car (a luxury one at that) was unparalleled.

I was disappointed to find out, they’d marked us as a “NO SHOW” when we arrived at 6pM, saying that we’d requested a 12PM pickup.
Needless to say, the only thing they now had, was double the price of the original car, but now the same price as most other regular rental companies, for things like toyotas or Chevrolets.

I won’t lie and say, the VOLVO they rented us, has me STRONGLY considering a volvo SUV the next time we upgrade.
It was a great car, but smelled A LOT like SAN DIEGO > > > ((more on that later))

We met Brandi & Lee downtown for a quick burger  & then headed back to their place to get a good night’s rest before our workshop the next day.

That morning, we headed to La Jolla Beach for the workshop portion of the trip > > >
I LOVE TEACHING MOM WORKSHOPS.

If you live somewhere super COOL and want me to travel to where you are, and teach you how to shoot, PLEASE EMAIL ME <3

I promise, it’s more affordable than you think,  and I am always up for a quick travel, to teach a mom in a new town!

Brandi was not just any mom though.
She has been one of my closest friends since high school.
It meant the world to me to be able to be in her new “hometown” teaching her how to shoot her two beautiful babes.

Here are a few pics she snapped of us IN MANUAL from our quick 1 on 1  workshop.
((don’t worry, we mostly shot her kiddos, but #dearjason and I could stand still for wayyyyy longer, which helped her learn her settings a bit quicker!))

La Jolla is beautiful because it’s got cliffs, a beach you can walk on, sea lions and much more.

We didn’t get to drive or walk around much because we had a photoshoot booked that evening ( and Brandi and I spent WAYYYY to much time buying all the cute things in target that AM ) but La Jolla is the first place I’d go back to, to spend the day at.

The beach was super foggy when we arrived ( I panicked assuming the entire state was actually on fire as everyone from Florida had warned us it would be) but as the afternoon sun peaked out, it all burned off, turning the water from a murky brown, to a bright kind of blue.

The water was chilly, but the air was warm and comfortable.

After the workshop was over, Jason & I headed for Annie’s Canyon to meet our photographer for our session, while Brandi and Lee went home to relax (being hostesses is a lot of work!)
We’d see them again the day before we left, for their photoshoot and a special farewell dinner.

We met our photographer (SARA) and she took a few memorable photos for me to stick into my cedar chest (and also post to social media)
as a token of our trip, which has become my new favorite keepsake.

Here are ((more than a few)) of my faves > > >

I will blog the rest of the trip soon, but for now, enjoy these beauties by DESERT BORN STUDIOS
